Norfolk & Western
Railroad "Pocahontas Division" By |
![]() |
My interest's lie in the N&W Pocahontas district of West Virginia. Circa late to
mid 1950's in the last days of steam. This is a coal hauling railroad with double track
and many middle track sidings. It is 107 miles long. The starting point in the West is
Williamson and ends in Bluefield. Ruling grade is 1-1.5 percent and it follows river
basins for most of it's run. There are many tunnels, with one very long one near the end
of the run into Bluefield. Coal loaders are just about everywhere and the railroad serves
practically all of them.
Changes in the plan since first published on this site have included but are not limited
to:
1. Move Williamson to the center of the room to gain access from both sides for maintenance.
2. Emphasize the large curved yard at Williamson as a focal point when you enter the room.
3. Relocate staging to consist of an upper and lower yard with point to point operation.
4. Provide for a helix to connect yards for re-staging between operating sessions.
5. Length of run desired and layout of towns resulted in a three deck design.
